Cancellation Policy

During winter weather, when poor road conditions are a possibility, Holland Symphony and Youth Orchestras follow Holland Public Schools closing decisions for EVENING ACTIVITIES.

Please note that when inclement weather forces a last minute schedule change, you can find out if the HPS schools are open or closed by calling their automated school info line: 616-494-2095 or checking on their website: http://www.hollandpublicschools.org

We will also post a message on the HSO phone line at 616-796-6780. Sometimes evening activities are still held as weather changes throughout the day.

If schools are closed in the morning, HPS will post updates about afterschool activities and evening events by 1:30pm on their website : http://www.hollandpublicschools.org.

If HPS evening activities are being held, HSO and HSYO WILL hold rehearsals.

Attendance Policy

ALL youth orchestra members are expected to attend all rehearsals and are required to attend all dress rehearsals (both Saturday and Sunday warm-up) and perform in both the fall and spring concerts. Students missing more than two rehearsals within one concert period or missing either required dress rehearsal may have their seating changed or be denied permission to perform in a concert. The conductor’s decision is final in all matters pertaining to absences from any dress rehearsal or concert

Midtown Building Policy – Security for youth programs

Security:  The 16thSt main entrance doors near the elevator will remain unlocked.  You are responsible for making a drop off/pick up plan with your student. Students should NOT run around outside the building while waiting for pick up rides.  They should wait inside the building.  It is strongly suggested you come in in to see the space and see what works best for you.  If students drive themselves, it might be a good idea to come together before the first rehearsal and see the options.  There is ample lighting in all parking lots and along 15thSt.

Policy on School Music Participation for youth orchestra members

It is important to us that all students and their parents are familiar with the school music policy of Holland Symphony Youth Orchestras and that they understand our support and enhancement of the school band and orchestra programs. We is grateful for the excellent support and encouragement we have received from school music directors. We depend upon their recommendations for possible youth orchestra candidates and for promoting HSYO. Without their endorsement, HSYO could not exist.

The musical interaction and experience gained by the student’s participation in school band and orchestra programs benefit both the student and each organization. It is NOT the intent of HSYO to become a substitute for school band and orchestra programs, but rather to complement them. School programs offer daily participation complemented by weekly HYSO rehearsals. Membership in school band and orchestra programs gives students access to All-State groups, Solo & Ensemble Festivals, additional leadership and literature experiences, school musicals, scholarship opportunities, and recommendations offered through the schools.

HSYO members make a tremendous contribution to school band and orchestra programs serving as role models, sharing talents, and repaying the start in music that they have received from these schools. For this reason, students must participate in their school band and orchestra programs to be members of the youth orchestra programs. Exceptions will be dealt with on a one-to-one basis in consultation with the school director.

Loss or Damage Policy

Holland Symphony Youth Orchestras is not liable for loss or damage of instruments or supplies while in rehearsals or concerts. Families are responsible for their own instrument insurance.
