Selections from Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Franz Von Suppé’s Poet and Peasants’ Overture
“Composed in 1846 for a Viennese “comedy with songs,” Franz Von Suppé’s Poet and Peasants’ Overture is filled with dramatic contrast. From the slow brass chorale opening to the cello solo with harp accompaniment, and concluding with a fast-paced dance, this overture keeps the listener entertained. Many of these themes have found their way into pop culture, finding places in cartoons, such as Looney Tunes, amongst others.
Special thanks to HSYO supporters Bob & Jean Olney and the John & Dede Howard Fund
